There’s a certain kind of nostalgia in stumbling upon something from your past travels. For many seasoned globetrotters, that could be some leftover foreign coins, a faded boarding pass, or a forgotten traveller’s cheque.

Before credit cards and mobile payments made their way into every corner of the globe, traveller’s cheques were the safest way to carry money abroad. Issues by companies such as American Express, Visa, etc., they could be replaced if lost or stolen and were accepted by banks and hotels worldwide. Today, most travellers have not seen one in years, but if you’ve just uncovered a stash in your old travel wallet, drawer, or safety deposit box, here’s what you need to know:
Are They Still Valid?
Surprisingly, yes! Most traveller’s cheques are still valid, no matter how long ago you bought them. Unlike personal cheques, which often expire after a few months, traveller’s cheques generally do not expire and remain backed by the company that issued them.

- American Express (Amex): Probably the most recognized name for traveller’s cheques, Amex stopped issuing new traveller’s cheques but guarantees redemption of all past cheques with no expiration date.
- Visa and Mastercard: Though less common today, both companies issued traveller’s cheques through partner banks. These also remain valid and can typically be cashed at large banks or by contacting the issuer directly.
- Other Issuers (Banks and Credit Unions): Some banks also issued their own branded cheques, often in partnership with Visa or Mastercard. In most cases, the parent company still backs them, though you may need to go through a major bank branch to redeem them. If banks turn you away, call the parent company and in most cases, they should be able to help you redeem them.

While these cheques are increasingly rare nowadays in everyday travel, they remain legally valid and redeemable, meaning that the dusty envelope you just found could translate into real cash today. Contact the issuer, cash them in, and maybe treat yourself to a dinner that celebrates your old adventures or put them towards your next trip!
