Are you heading to Cuba this winter? There have been some big currency changes for tourists recently so, before you go, it's essential to brush up on some facts about their currency. To help get your Cuban getaway started right, we've compiled four tips for Canadian travellers when they arrive in this beautiful Caribbean country.
1.You cannot use Cuban Convertible Pesos (CUC) anymore.
If you’ve travelled to Cuba in the past 20 years, chances are that you’re familiar with the CUC. It used to be that CUC was accepted everywhere on the island, from buying trinkets in souvenir shops to grabbing a meal. CUC also had a fixed rate that served as an optimal way to keep track of purchases. In 2021, the CUC was phased out, making the Cuban Peso (CUP) the main form of legal currency. Unfortunately, with CUC out of circulation, travellers will have to adjust and use their local currency instead. Click here to see the exchange rate.
2. Bring cash!
Tourists with cash in hand can take full advantage of the many attractions, restaurants, and shops Cuba has to offer. While cashless payments are becoming increasingly more common, and can be used at some establishments, it is best to be prepared with cash, as some banks don’t allow card use in Cuba.
3. Avoid scams
Scams can happen anywhere, and Cuba is no exception. Ensure when you are paying with Cuban Pesos that you're receiving Cuba Pesos in return and not Cuban Convertible Pesos. One key way to tell is by the faces on the Cuban Pesos.
4. Spend your CUP before going through security at the airport
Once you pass security at the airport, you won’t be able to use Cuban Pesos. Only foreign currency, like Canadian dollars, will be accepted as cash payment. Make sure you spend all of your CUP on your vacation, because you won’t be able to use it for food, drinks, or souvenirs at the airport.
When travelling, it’s important to understand the ins and outs of local currency standards so that you can enjoy your vacation without any financial worries. If you have any more questions about currency before your trip, or if you would like to exchange currency, reach out to our team!
